In order to accomplish that feat – the first time the public had EVER been allowed inside the facility – Martin had to work closely with Dick Cheney’s office at the White House. At the time he was Secretary of Defense under the Presidency of George H. W. Bush, and Martin recalls how tediously the entire planning portion of the event played out.
“From the very first inquiry into feasibility and along every step of the way, the process was as meticulous as any I’ve ever experienced. Invitees had to provide proof of citizenship by sending in copies of their birth certificates, and were thoroughly screened and vetted. I actually barely passed the approval process due to having been born in Zaire, Africa!” Martin stated. “I’ll never forget as we neared event day hearing a page over the office intercom, ‘Zan Martin, Dick Cheney’s office on line 1, Dick Cheney’s office, Line 1.’ I recall thinking to myself did anyone record that?”
