Morristown, NC – There are few engines more synonymous with the high performance heydays of Detroit than the “Hemi.” The hemispherical headed big block Chrysler engine set back-to-back records, whether on the salt flats, the quarter mile or on the tall banks of NASCAR. Cutting their teeth on those same tracks using the legendary “elephant” engine was Arrington Performance’s founder Buddy Arrington.
Fellow racer and friend to “The King,” Richard Petty, Arrington and Petty developed a mutual respect for the hemispherical combustion chambered engine, particularly as Petty – behind the wheel of his “Petty Blue” Plymouth won the first of a record-setting seven Daytona 500s. No slouch himself, Arrington competed in the Winston Cup series for 25 years, learning all the tricks to get the most out of the big Mopar powerplants.
This applied know-how quickly sprouted the beginnings of Arrington Performance. As more and more NASCAR and NHRA race teams (including Penske, Petty, and Ganassi) turned to Arrington, drivers from all walks of life came for one of their stroked Hemi engines and custom performance parts. Since then, Arrington has continuously been on the cutting edge of modern Hemi performance, introducing innovative new applications for late model American muscle cars, classics and hot rods.
Today, the company operates from a 105,000 square-foot facility that is home to one of the finest race engine development, manufacturing and testing programs in the business. Their team of race-seasoned engine builders, tuners, machinists and dyno operators have become so engrained in the world of Hemi performance that they have become a key Research and Development arm of Dodge Motorsports, earning several Dodge Manufacturing Awards, as well as multiple Craftsman Truck Series Manufacturers and the Engine Builders Awards.
It’s here in the foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains that Arrington Performance has grown from a couple family members and friends wrenching on their hot rods and race cars in a shared garage to a true center of top-level Hemi performance. Key to this legacy is using the right parts in their clients engines. MAHLE Motorsports have been the piston of choice of Arrington Performance for years.
“We learned of MAHLE through our NASCAR Cup, Nationwide and Camping World programs, and wouldn’t consider anything else for the street,” explained Arrington Performance President & CEO Eric Hruza. “We have never failed a MAHLE piston if the motor was used in accordance with the specs and design limits. AND we’ve seen a huge number of motors that have been used far in excess of the intended limits without a failure.”
