Marine City, MI (November 27, 2012) – Retirement wasn’t in the cards for Bill Howell. A 26-year development engineer for General Motors, Bill watched as many performance enthusiasts converted their carbureted V8s to electronic fuel injection. Having dedicated so much of his professional career to developing and mastering EFI for GM, Bill paired with son Matt – who had been working as a professional landscaper – and formed Howell Engine Development.
Started in Bill’s basement in 1988, Howell Engine Development was targeted at creating electronic fuel injection conversions for the hot rod/street rod and four wheel drive industries with the goal of reducing the difficulty in adapting late model GM engines or fuel injection systems in older pre-computer vehicles of all types. Using the same GM electronic components that Bill helped develop, including the GM engine control module (ECM) and oxygen sensor, and complete GM diagnostic capabilities, all Howell EFI systems are full function plug-and-play kits.
Howell’s custom self-contained wiring harness packages employ GM Packard high temperature (TXL insulation) automotive wire, genuine Packard connectors and terminals, and include Packard crimping tools. According to Howell, “As an adjunct to our wiring harnesses, we developed complete throttle body and multi-port fuel injection systems. We combine proven GM electronic components, Howell wiring harnesses, two and four-barrel TBI and TPI units. With extensive development on both big-block and small block engines, these systems are attractive updates for both hot rods, production carbureted vehicles, and off-road four wheel drive vehicles seeking performance and fuel economy.”
This set Howell Engine Development apart from then-competitors. So much so, that later that year, Rick Voegelin (who had worked with Bill on editorial stories while he was at GM) from Hot Rod Magazine ran a feature story in the April issue – causing an overnight explosion in demand. Howell was still being ran from Bill’s home, and the influx of sales calls came in through the home phone number – which was the only number he had to run in the advertisement. According to Matt, “Mom went absolutely nuts with the calls.”
Within a short time, Matt bought a three story house, rented the upstairs, lived on the middle floor and converted the basement to the business office and warehouse. In 1993, Bill and Matt built the building they are in today with profits from the business and without having to take out any loans.
