NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nashville’s famed Fisk Jubilee Singers will be honored as part of the Music City Soul Series event featuring a concert by Grammy-Award-winning blues musician Keb’ Mo’ on February 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Studio Gallery at Fontanel, the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corporation (NCVC) announced. The concert will serve as a fundraiser for the Fisk Jubilee Singers, who are also slated to perform, along with The Farm and additional musical artists. The Music City Soul Series, a program of the NCVC, is produced during Black History Month and honors the contributions of African American musicians to Music City.
“It is critical that Nashville continuously honor our heritage and when you speak of Music City, that means the Fisk Jubilee Singers,” said Butch Spryidon, president of the Nashville Convention & Visitor Corporation. “The Fisk Jubilee Singers were the first musical touring group from this city and began a legacy that musical artists have followed ever since. They represent the core of our musical roots.”
Tickets for the event are $75 and go on sale Saturday, January 12 at 9 a.m. They can be purchased through the Fontanel Box Office in person from 9 – 5 daily, by calling 615-724-1600, or online at www.fontanelmansion.com. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Fisk Jubilee Singers.
About the Fisk Jubilee Singers
The Fisk Jubilee Singers are vocal artists and students at Fisk University in Nashville, TN., who sing and travel worldwide. The original Jubilee Singers introduced ‘slave songs’ to the world in 1871 and were instrumental in preserving this unique American musical tradition known today as Negro spirituals.
They broke racial barriers in the US and abroad in the late 19th century and entertained Kings and Queens in Europe. At the same time, they raised money in support of their beloved school.
