Oskaloosa, IA (October 18, 2012) – Tough work requires tougher tools. So when the idea for the Ram Long-Hauler was devised, only one company was chosen to provide the strongest, most durable air suspension available today: Kelderman. Based on an ’11 Class 5 Ram 5500 chassis-cab truck with a massive 197.4-inch wheelbase, the Long-Hauler touts a 6.7L Cummins diesel engine rated for 305hp and 610 lb-ft of torque and is backed by a medium-duty Aisin Seiki AS68RC six-speed automatic transmission, a NV273 two-speed transfer case, a Magna front axle, and the grenade-proof Dana S111 rear end – both housings contain really steep 4.88 gears.
Designed to meet the needs of high-end equestrian customers, the Long-Hauler obviously had to be able to haul a heavy load while being exceptionally comfortable and be able to drive all day long without refueling. Sounds like an impossible task, right? Not so. Hidden inside the mid-ship box is a 38-gallon fuel tank in addition to the Ram 5500’s urea tank. To give the Long-Hauler its namesake fuel range, an additional 110-gallon fuel tank was mounted in the bed of the truck giving a total fuel capacity of 170 gallons, elevating the range to around 1,500 miles!
Up front and in the rear Kelderman installed its automatic, self-leveling, air spring suspension and stout Rancho RS9000 shocks. When hitched to a trailer, the rear air springs automatically filled, bringing the truck back up to ride height.
Inside the Long-Hauler is much more than the typical Laramie Longhorn in the way of comfort and amenities. Up front, an EGT, boost, and rear axle temperature gauges were added in a custom-built center stack. The extended rear seating features fold-out work trays, power-actuated footrests, three 110-volt power points, a refrigerator, rear seat DVD system and its own Wi-Fi hotspot…and even a gun safe under the seat!
